About Image Converter

Free image converter online — convert between PNG, JPG, WebP, AVIF (where supported), GIF and BMP in your browser, one file or a whole batch. Transparent areas are filled with white when you convert to JPG or BMP, GIF output is limited to 256 colours, and a before/after slider lets you check lossy results. Files are written in the real format you choose (not just renamed), nothing is uploaded, and you can download everything as a ZIP.

Picking the right output format

Converting is about choosing the format that suits where the image will be used. Use JPG for photographs that need to be small and widely compatible. Use PNG for screenshots, logos and graphics that need sharp edges or transparency. Use WebP for website images — it is usually the smallest while keeping transparency. Use GIF only when a platform demands it, and BMP only for legacy software.

What to expect when converting

Converting to JPG or BMP fills transparent areas with white because those formats cannot store transparency. Converting a JPG to PNG does not bring back detail the JPG already threw away; the file just gets bigger. Converting to GIF reduces a picture to 256 colours and saves a still image, so animated GIFs keep only their first frame.

ToolzGo writes the real format you choose — BMP and GIF are encoded properly rather than renamed — so the files open in any app that supports that format.

Troubleshooting

  • A file won’t open after converting — check that the program supports the format; WebP and AVIF are newer and not every desktop app can open them.
  • Colours look banded in a GIF — that is the 256-colour limit; use PNG or WebP for photos.
  • The converted JPG looks soft — raise the quality slider, or use PNG for graphics with text.
  • Landing here from a “PNG to JPG” page? The output format is already preselected for you.
