About This Tool

Free body fat calculator online — estimate your body fat percentage using the US Navy circumference method, which only requires a tape measure and your height, neck, waist (and hip for women) measurements. No sign-up, no upload, entirely browser-based. This method was developed for military body composition standards and remains one of the most accessible ways to estimate body fat without specialized equipment like calipers or a DEXA scan. Results include your estimated body fat percentage and the general fitness category it falls into.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is the US Navy method?+
It typically estimates body fat within 3–4% of more precise methods like DEXA scans for most people, making it a reasonably accurate and highly accessible option compared to specialized equipment.
Where do I measure my waist and neck?+
Measure your neck just below the larynx (Adam's apple), and your waist at the narrowest point (or at the navel if there is no natural narrowing). Keep the tape measure snug but not compressing the skin.
Why does the formula differ for men and women?+
Body fat distribution differs by sex — women naturally carry a higher percentage of body fat, and the Navy formula accounts for this by including a hip measurement for women that isn't needed for men.
